Jupiter Class UKS2
Welcome to Jupiter Class
On this page you can find out more about what your child is learning this half term at school.
PE will continue to be on a Monday and Wednesday.
Homework
For the Summer term, the main home tasks are spellings and revisiting important parts of the English curriculum. Spellings are tested every Friday. There are currently five each week but this will increase as the children become more used to doing them. Reading practice carried out at home- from the school given book and any other sources that appeal to your child- will benefit them greatly.
English
For the first half of this term, we will be creating a non-chronological report on Emperor Penguins, drawing upon a range of factual information, including their habitat, diet, life cycle, and adaptations. We will use structured writing techniques, such as subheadings, technical vocabulary, and formal language, to present our findings in a clear and engaging manner.
We will then be reading The Nowhere Emporium. The children will use this text as inspiration to craft their own narratives, drawing from the themes, settings, and characters presented. They will develop their own imaginative stories based on the world of The Nowhere Emporium, incorporating rich description and creative storytelling techniques. This will continue into the second half of the Summer term.
Grammar
We will be revisiting prior grammar knowledge to help consolidate pupils' understanding and ensure key concepts are fully embedded. This revision will take place not only during dedicated grammar lessons but also as part of our morning routine. By regularly revisiting and reinforcing grammar skills in different contexts, pupils will have more opportunities to practise and retain what they have learned.
Maths
We will be continuing with decimals before revisiting fractions, decimals, and percentages. We will then explore ratio and algebra, using prior knowledge to make connections and deepen our understanding of these mathematical concepts.
Science
During this half term, we will be finishing off the space unit, looking at heliocentric/geocentric models and the phases of the moon. We will then explore light, vision, and the parts of the eye. We will investigate shadows—how they form and change—and build a periscope to see how light travels in a straight line.
History
We will explore the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for England, learning how their battles shaped the unified country we know today. We’ll discover where these groups came from, how they fought for power, and what daily life was like, including Viking runes and Anglo-Saxon tales like Beowulf
Art
We will be designing a theater set for a scene from Esio Trot, where Mr. Hoppy looks down from his balcony to pass the magical spell to Mrs. Silver. We will explore different concepts and will learn how lighting affects a scene.
PSHE
We will explore how everyday drugs like nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, and medicines impact health. We will also learn about illegal drugs, drug laws, why people use them, and how the media influences choices. Ground rules will be set at the start of each lesson.
Computing
In this unit, we’ll dive into the world of programming with Scratch, using games to understand how variables work. We’ll explore real-world examples, build a scoreboard simulation, and play around with modifying variables. By following the Use-Modify-Create approach, we’ll take existing projects and make them our own, experimenting along the way.
PE
Multi-Skills Football, Rugby and Dance will be the focuses of the PE lessons this half term. The children will continue to increase their ball skills, including accuracy and kicking. They will learn to link skills and movements to increase their mobility and skill.
Music
In music, the children will be having an external music teaching coming into school to teach them how to play the recorder. They will be joining with the rest of key stage 2 to enjoy this experience.
RE
We will explore Holy Week and develop persuasive writing skills by debating who was responsible for Jesus' death. Over two lessons, they’ll gather evidence to support their views. They'll also learn about martyrdom and why Christians see Jesus’ death as a sacrifice, with the topic continuing into Summer 2
French
During this term we will be learning about holidays. We will use a range of games and short bursts of French to help our understanding and learning.
Ways you can help at home
Please read as much as possible with your children, allow them to read for pleasure and encourage them to use subtitles when using screen. There have been many studies compiled that identify the benefits of subtitles supporting reading, spelling and punctuation use.
Ensure that you are supporting their spelling and times tables practise either through TTRS, apps and written practise.
Try to encourage your children to present their work with pride and using cursive handwriting, to build consistency and fluency.
Please ask your child about their day and what they have learnt, those conversations are fundamental in embedding their learning at home. Check dojo to ensure that all messages and work shared is celebrated.
