The Northill Way

At Northill we structure our curriculum using the National Curriculum for England (2014) as our core curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2. We carefully plan and map our learning objectives from this document, ensuring we provide our pupils with the aspirational, engaging and motivational learning experiences they deserve. For the full National Curriculum overview, please check the link below.

At Northill we structure our curriculum with a thematic approach to learning. We strive to make links between subjects and create opportunities for developing knowledge in specific subjects through creatively planned curriculum opportunities.

Some of our subjects are taught discreetly, through specific subject time, others are carefully structured across each year to ensure key learning can take place effectively under our theme of term.

See the links below to explore specific subjects and discover the plans for each of the National Curriculum subjects.

During the academic Year 2021_22 our timetable has been carefully designed to support the implementation of the National Curriculum. We have re-organised classes to support pupils in the learning recovery as a result of COVID-19 and the lost time in school. As a result we now have 3 classes, organised as follows:

Class 1: Flamingos Class (Reception and Year 1 pupils)

Class 2: Swans Class (A mix of Year 2, 3 and 4 pupils)

Class 3: Eagles Class (A mix of Year 2, 3 and 4 pupils)

The rationale behind this decision can be seen in the attached presentation below. Through enabling this class combination we are able to support our pupils to re-address learning that may have been missed as a result of the school closures, as well as support accelerated progress through small class sizes. Our average class size this year is just 16 pupils, with a range of adults supporting.

Pupils are taught as individual classes for some subjects (particularly topic related learning) however split into their individual year groups for some subject specific content, for example, Maths continues to be taught in single age groups, whereas English is often taught as classes, with clear differentiation for pupils across the class.

A Timetable of how our week is structured across the school can be seen below.
