What Is In The Moment Planning?
Our implementation method within the Reception Year, the final year of the EYFS curriculum, is based almost entirely on the pupils within the class. We utilise the flexibility and adaptabiltiy of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum to ensure the voices of out pupils is heard and responded to in such a way that they rarely notice the amazing learning journey they are taking.
'In the Moment' planning and teaching allows us to follow the interests and needs of our individual pupils with great interest, intervening and scaffolding learning through 'teachable moments' on a continual basis. We continue to set aspirations for our pupils through play based learning activities that we relate to the noticed interests of the child. This means our classroom and outdoor environment becomes adaptable to these interests, allowing us to spend one week as a space station and the next as a vet surgery or maybe even a dinosaur village.
Each week a small group of 3 or 4 children become the focus children within the class, this sets the key interest theme for the week and allows all of the children in Flamingos Class to really get to know one another and immerse themselves in their own learning journeys as well as that of their peers. With this class only being a 0.5 entry class (up to 15 children) we are fortunate to have the time to really get to know our pupils before sending them to continue their journey with us throughout Key Stage 1 and 2.
In the Year 2021_22 our Early Years cohort is very small. Children are sharing their space with Year 1 pupils, meaning they are able to experience more formal learning opportunities alongside their continuous provision. Through the luxury of having such a small cohort we are able to individually tailor our curriculum for each child, with a mix of formal and in the moment learning experiences carefully planned and organsied for the pupils.
