In September 2019 Northill began its journey to develop our Mathematics curriculum towards a Mastery Approach to learning. At this time we enrolled into our local Maths Hub: Enigma
Enigma Maths Hub is one of a network of 40 Maths Hubs in England, working together within the Maths Hubs Programme, which began in 2014. The programme is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.
The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.
Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.
At Northill CE Academy, we support our journey of implementing a Mastery approach to Mathematics through the use of resources and curriculum planning developed by White Rose Hub.
Together, with White Rose, we’re building a whole new culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress. No matter what a child's starting point, we help teachers and learners everywhere to achieve excellence.
Our mantra is simple: Everyone Can do Maths: EVERYONE CAN
As we prove this to pupils and teachers alike, we’re shaping assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of maths. They become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in maths but also support them across the curriculum.
As we are at Northill, White Rose is committed to working together to be and give the very best, and to make a difference to every pupil.
