Maths at Northill

Maths is a subject that has evolved hugely at Northill recently. Since enrolling in the NCETM ENIGMA Maths Hub in September 2019 we have been on a journey to evolve our maths curriculum into one which support our pupils to develop at a faster pace while continuing to focus on our whole school curriculum intent. In order to support our pupils to meet their aspirations and become independent learners we are teaching Maths through the principles of mastery. 

 

The mastery approach to mathematics is one that has been developed by teachers from high performing countries, such as Shang Hai. this, interlinked with our own National Curriculum (2014), which states: that all pupils:-

•become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics

•reason mathematically using mathematical language

•can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems

 

At Northill we have an expectation that all children are capable of achieving high standards and provide a curriculum that allows them to do so. A large majority of our children progress through the curriculum content at the same pace- following age related expectations. Where needed adaptations can be achieved by emphasising deep knowledge through individual support and intervention. Teaching is always underpinned by methodical curriculum and lesson design which allows for practice and consolidation to take a central role in learning. Our teachers use precise questioning, articulate clear language and expect the same in return and support our pupils to develop a love for mathematics that allows for relatable, enthusiastic attitudes towards learning.
